Exciting play in 50th anniversary championships

The 2013 Boys' CYO Basketball playoffs recently concluded with exciting final games marked by excellent shooting and skilled defensive play.

In the eighth grade, St. Bede, Hayward, captured the "AA" championship by defeating Christ the King, Pleasant Hill, 61-54.

In the "A" championship, St. Martin de Porres, Oakland, won over Corpus Christi, Piedmont, 40-33. For the St. Bede team, it was their fifth trip to playoffs and their fourth straight championship victory.

The seventh-grade division also saw tight games with Immaculate Heart of Mary, Brentwood, winning over St. Mary, Walnut Creek by two points in the "AA" championship, 43-41. St. Lawrence O'Toole, Oakland, defeated Good Shepherd, Pittsburg, 54-44, to win the seventh-grade "A" division. It was the St. Lawrence O'Toole team's fourth trip to the final game and its first championship.

As a CYO program, St. Lawrence O'Toole School was very successful in the playoffs, capturing championships in the fourth, sixth and seventh grades.

8th grade: St. Bede d. Christ the King, 61-54

7th grade: Immaculate Heart of Mary d. St. Mary, 43-41

6th grade: All Saints d. Santa Maria, 42-25

5th grade: St. John Vianney d. Assumption, 40-31

4th grade: St. Monica d. St. Mary, 42-40

Championship games and scores in the "A" division were:

8th grade: St. Martin de Porres d. Corpus Christi, Piedmont, 40-33

7th grade: St. Lawrence O'Toole d. Good Shepherd, 54-44

6th grade: St. Lawrence O'Toole d. Corpus Christi, Piedmont, 39-33

5th grade: St. Patrick, Rodeo d. St. Elizabeth, 34-20

4th grade: St. Lawrence O'Toole d. St. Paul, 33-21

This was the 50th annual Oakland Diocese Boy's CYO Basketball playoffs since the founding of the diocese, featuring 60 CYO basketball teams from around the diocese. The playoffs were held at St. Bede Parish, Hayward; St. Joachim Parish, Hayward; St. Elizabeth Parish, Oakland; and St. Theresa Parish, Oakland, over two weekends.

The teams represented the six participating leagues playing in CYO boys' basketball playoffs, with more than 1,000 teams and 10,000 players competing in CYO basketball this past season. There are two divisions in each grade level of playoffs, the "AA" division for the larger leagues and parishes, and the "A" division for smaller leagues or Catholic school programs.
