St. John Vianney Fifth Graders won the diocesan championship with three consecutive
overtime baskets.


St. John Vianney bests St. Bonaventure
in Girls' CYO Basketball Playoffs

In an exciting overtime game in the finals of Girls' CYO Basketball Playoffs, the Fifth Grade team from St. John Vianney, Walnut Creek, won the diocesan championship over St. Bonaventure, Concord.


With the game tied at the end of regulation 14-14, Macy Woodworth of SJV scored three consecutive baskets to lead her team to a 20-16 victory. It was the second diocesan girls' championship won by a team from St. John Vianney, the first in 2002.

In a close Eighth Grade final, Santa Maria, Orinda, won 39-30, over Good Shepherd, Pittsburg. With her team ahead by only three points at the end of the third quarter, Santa Maria's Caroline Sernett scored two, three point baskets and a two point field goal to lead her team to the championship.

The Oakland Diocese Girls' CYO Basketball playoffs were hosted for girls' CYO basketball teams in the eastern portion of the diocese. The playoffs included 40 CYO basketball teams with 400 participants. Games were played at St. Mary's parish gym, Walnut Creek; Foothill Middle School, Walnut Creek; and Christ the King gym, Pleasant Hill. Finals were played at St. Francis of Assisi gym, Concord.
